The drawing exhibition “Xipocos”, by Ash Ismael, opens this Wednesday at the Camões Portuguese Cultural Centre (CCP) in Maputo. The exhibition features works in which the artist explores figures from traditional Mozambican folklore associated with ancestral spirits and manifestations of the invisible world.

Based on this cultural reference, Ash Ismael develops a series of drawings that explore the boundaries between the real and the imaginary, and the conscious and the subconscious, inviting the public to reflect on memories, fears, mythologies, and the spiritual dimension present in Mozambican traditions.
The exhibition brings together a collection of works on how its author sees the world. According to Ash Ismael, it “is about all of us, the liars who tell the truth.”
The term “xipoco” means, in the languages of the South of the country, ghost, spirit, or supernatural physical manifestation.
Ash Ismael is a Mozambican multidisciplinary artist, originally from Maputo, whose artistic production encompasses visual arts, electronic music, graphic design, photography, and video. Over more than three decades of creative activity, he has established himself as a reference in artistic experimentation, exploring different languages and crossing sound and image in his work.
