Sometimes, life happens without warning, and yet, as if to surprise the sudden moments, the photojournalist finds himself challenged to document reality. This has been the life of Carlos Uqueio, the "Reporter of Shadows and Hopes," as he calls himself in his first book.

The work is the result of 18 years of career behind the camera, with which he immortalized different realities of Mozambique and more than 20 countries he had the privilege of visiting. His catalog includes moments that marked at least the last two decades.

"This book is born from the streets, the neighborhoods, the moments when life happens without warning and without staging," stated the man who not only presents well-captured images, but "crosses photography and writing to offer not only the perspective, but also the context."

According to journalist Pretilério Matsinhe, who presented “Reporter of Shadows and Hope: Photography as a Testimony of Reporting” this Wednesday in Maputo, the book goes beyond a simple visual record, constituting an appeal to collective conscience.

“We have often seen cities flooded, urban and suburban neighborhoods underwater, and our perplexity lies in the fact that we cannot find a solution to a recurring problem,” he said, adding that Uqueio also “asks us all for this awareness of these phenomena.”
