In New York, a Mozambican film is receiving applause: “The Prophet,” as it was named by its director Ique Langa, a co-production between Mozambique, South Africa, and Qatar.
The film premieres in New York as part of the New Directors/New Films (ND/NF) program, presented by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and Film at Lincoln Center.
“The Prophet” is a 94-minute film that explores the crisis of faith of Pastor Hélder, who, after losing his belief, resorts to traditional witchcraft in a desperate attempt to recover it, entering a spiral of sacrifice and unexpected consequences.
Kind and deeply loved by the people of his parish in Mandlakaze, the religious man questions where his faith has gone and how he can regain it. His search leads him to an unexpected realm: traditional witchcraft.
Presented in luminous black and white, the feature film, which in 2024 received Final Cut support at the 81st Venice International Film Festival.
Before this New York premiere, “The Prophet” had already made history by becoming the first Mozambican film selected for the competitive section of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), one of the most important independent film festivals in the world.
