The Namanhumbir Community Radio, built and equipped by Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM), has resumed broadcasting after a long period of interruption caused by acts of vandalism during the demonstrations in December 2024.
Since its inauguration in April 2022, the 94.1FM station, the first and only radio signal in Namanhumbir, has established itself as the most comprehensive community communication platform in this administrative post of the Montepuez district, in Cabo Delgado, allowing the dissemination of content in the areas of education, health, agriculture, entrepreneurship, culture and citizenship.
In addition to providing relevant information of public interest, the radio also constitutes a space for the dissemination of initiatives that contribute to socio-economic development and the improvement of the quality of life of communities, reinforcing inclusion, dialogue and social cohesion within a 70km radius.
The Mozambican Association for Community Education (AMEC), a civil society organization based in Montepuez, has been managing the Namanhumbir Community Radio station since its opening.
According to Maria Namarocolo, president of AMEC, the radio station is a true voice of and for the local population. “The station plays a fundamental role in promoting and defending the rights of children, who are often vulnerable to child labor and early marriages associated with illegal mining,” she said.
More than just promoting access to information, the radio station creates job opportunities. Currently, nine people are employed at the station. The Namanhumbir Community Radio station was built as part of Montepuez Ruby Mining's Corporate Social Responsibility program.
The station has also allowed MRM to raise awareness and educate communities about the dangers of illegal mining, which continues to harm the social fabric of the Administrative Post. Through its programming, the station seeks to discourage behaviors that put both individuals and others at risk, while promoting safer and more sustainable livelihoods.
