Women dedicate verses to Noémia de Sousa

The centenary of the birth of the great Mozambican poet Noémia de Sousa (1926-2026), considered the mother of Mozambican poets, is not going unnoticed, with several events marking this historic occasion.

The Mozambican Writers' Association (AEMO) is organizing a poetry and prose anthology to celebrate the author. This project is aimed at Mozambican women who are inspired by the writings of this figure, one of the greatest in Mozambican poetry and beyond.

It is a gesture of reverence for Noémia de Sousa's courage and contribution to the struggle for national independence and the emancipation of Mozambicans. Noémia championed Black pride, the valorization of African roots, and the liberation of Mozambicans. Her poetry is marked by strength, indignation, hope, and social commitment.

Although she wrote most of her work between the 1940s and 1950s, her poems were only collected and published in book form much later, in the work "Sangue Negro" (2001), which consolidated her literary recognition.

Noémia de Sousa passed away on December 4, 2002, in Cascais, Portugal.
