Communities in the protection of biodiversity

Biodiversity conservation is essential for social, economic, and community well-being. In the Marromeu Complex, in the Zambezi Delta, this is evident, as nature is only truly protected when local communities are genuinely involved.

It was in this context that the Biodiversity Conservation Foundation (BIOFUND) recently strengthened its partnerships with the local government, private operators, and, above all, with the communities that live in and depend on the territory.

These communities are not only beneficiaries but also key players in the protection of wildlife and ecosystems. They contribute to social well-being by supporting schools, health centers, and families, and actively participate in conservation programs, with an emphasis on youth involvement.

In this context, operators such as Zambeze Delta Safaris, Marromeu Safaris, and Nyati Safaris demonstrate that collaboration between nature and the local population creates solid and lasting results.

Recognized as a Ramsar Site since 2004, the Marromeu Complex is one of the most valuable, but also most vulnerable, landscapes in Southern Africa. In this context, BIOFUND has reinforced its commitment through long-term funding and structural actions, such as the support provided during the Covid-19 pandemic, which guaranteed salaries for more than a thousand workers and rangers.
