During a seminar on cooperation between Mozambique and Portugal, the National Director of Migrant Labor, Alice Brito, warned of the increase in hiring practices outside official channels.

She explained that many Mozambicans end up accepting direct hires due to economic necessity or lack of information. But this path puts them at risk: they become more vulnerable to exploitation, without legal protection and without access to the minimum guarantees that ensure dignified migration.

Alice Brito stressed that ideally, recruitment should be done through formal mechanisms, as foreseen in the protocol of intentions between the two countries. When this does not happen, workers lose important rights and are left without the necessary protection.

Each informal hire means an unprotected citizen, outside the social security systems and more exposed to abuse in a competitive labor market.

The Ministry advocates for migration that respects the lives, dreams, and dignity of Mozambicans, ensuring that those seeking new opportunities abroad do so safely and with legal support.

For Alice Brito, correctly guiding workers is not only a legal obligation—it is also everyone's responsibility, aligned with existing agreements between Mozambique and Portugal.

Strengthening migration control is a way to protect citizens and ensure that every Mozambican who leaves in search of a better future does so informed, protected, and safe.
