Condom: an essential ally in public health

Condoms continue to be a fundamental tool in preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancies. However, while male use has increased, uptake among women has decreased, warns Avisa Faquir, manager of the Provincial Council for Combating HIV and AIDS (CPCS) Programme for the city of Maputo.

The reduction in condom use among women is worrying, as it increases vulnerability to various infections, including HIV.

"It is essential to raise awareness and ensure access to protection for all", says the specialist.

To mitigate this trend, Faquir advocates the adoption of strategies such as educational campaigns aimed at the target audience, as well as greater availability of condoms in health services.

"It is necessary that target groups are frequently reached with clear and effective messages, based on a people-centred approach and consumer research", she suggests.

She also highlights the importance of intensifying community talks and actions to reach different social groups, combating myths and cultural barriers that hinder the acceptance of condoms.

The specialist also stresses the need for programs that encourage open dialogue about sexual health. "It is necessary to promote women's autonomy in choosing protection, ensuring access to effective methods and clear information", she states.

Reversing this scenario depends on a joint effort between health authorities, civil society and awareness campaigns.

"Condom use should be seen as a shared commitment by everyone, ensuring safe and responsible sexual health", she concludes.
