A step against the road tragedy

In a land where the horizon seems infinite and roads carry stories of meetings and farewells, a promise of transformation arises. Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, is preparing to host smart driving test centers—a milestone that aims to revolutionize how the country trains and certifies its drivers.
This initiative, led by the National Institute of Road Transport (INATRO), is more than a response to modernity; it is an attempt to rewrite the narrative of Mozambique's roads, often associated with tragedies and loss. With a public tender already launched, the goal is to implement cutting-edge technology to ensure that the process of obtaining a driver's license becomes fairer, more efficient, and safer.
The new centers promise to bring an unprecedented technological landscape to the country’s traffic system. Surveillance cameras, sensors, and artificial intelligence will be integrated into the exam experience, monitoring every movement with precision. Beyond simply passing or failing candidates, the technology will allow examinees to experience real traffic conditions on specially designed tracks.
The practical circuits, built on international best practices, will replace traditional road tests with routes that simulate everyday scenarios. Additionally, the centers will feature dedicated spaces for examiners and observation platforms, ensuring a more controlled and transparent environment.
Modernizing the driving test system is part of a broader effort to combat the high rate of road accidents in the country. Over the past five years, more than 4,800 lives have been lost in traffic accidents in Mozambique, often due to factors such as speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.
With smart centers, INATRO seeks not only to certify better-prepared drivers but also to foster a culture of greater responsibility on the roads. This initiative represents an investment in training conscientious drivers capable of reducing the alarming numbers that plague Mozambican traffic.
More than buildings equipped with advanced technology, these centers symbolize a commitment to the future. They are spaces where technological progress meets the urgency to preserve lives—where every lesson and every test represents a promise of safer roads. As Maputo moves forward to embrace this innovation, there is hope that every kilometer traveled on Mozambican roads will be marked by caution and safety. It is the beginning of a new journey, where technology and responsibility walk hand in hand to rewrite the destiny of the country's roads.
