Fidel Muchanga and Francisco Fumo were the faces of Mozambique at the 21st Santa Catarina Music Festival (FEMUSC), which took place from January 11th to 24th in Brazil.
Both represent the Xiquitsi project and presented Mozambican and African songs, such as “Xonguile” and “Nweti”, by José Barata and Mingas, respectively. Muchanga played the viola and Fumo the double bass.
Celebrating its 21st anniversary in 2026, FEMUSC is a benchmark in the field of classical music in Brazil and Latin America. It is dedicated to the training, dissemination and promotion of concert music. It takes place annually in the state of Santa Catarina, bringing together young musicians, students, teachers and artists of recognized national and international prestige.
This is Xiquitsi's second appearance at FEMUSC. The first was last year, represented by musicians Alfredo Matine, Moisés Cossa, Yara Carvalho, Shaira Chaúque, Carla Cutana, Lourena Uamusse, and Altino Munguambe. In addition to participating in various orchestras, the artists also integrated the production of the opera "Madama Butterfly".
Created in 2013, Xiquitsi is a social project for collective music education aimed at children and young people between six and 25 years old, with two aspects: the formation of orchestras and choirs in Mozambique and the Classical Music Season.
The students are mostly from less privileged social strata. It provides free and open access to music education, as well as offering a daily meal and transportation support for the most needy students.
