In just two days of cleaning, more than six tons of solid waste were removed from the beaches of Zitundo, in Maputo. Now, this aquatic waste will be reused and play a crucial role in generating income for local families.
While this effort highlights the amount of waste left by users on beaches, it also reveals the potential to transform this waste into employment and business opportunities. This is the objective of the “Fisherman-Gatherer” project, from the Mozambican Recycling Association (AMOR).
The project advocates community cleaning campaigns carried out by volunteers. In addition to waste removal and reflections on the importance of proper waste management for environmental preservation.
In craft workshops, for example, they teach participants how to transform disposable packaging, accessories, earrings and wallets. Another important action is the production of biochar and briquettes, sustainable solutions that use organic waste as an alternative source of energy.
This is how 6,281.30 kilos of solid waste were acquired in Zitundo. In total, 32 people participated in the training, with emphasis on female engagement, which is fundamental in promoting ecological practices and strengthening the community.
The “Pescador-Catador” project has the support of the French Embassy in Mozambique and the Maputo Environmental Protection Area, promoting innovative solutions for waste management and sustainable development.
