The School of Communication and Arts at Eduardo Mondlane University (ECA-UEM) recently launched the Josina Machel Opera in Maputo, an interdisciplinary artistic research project that pays homage to one of the most emblematic figures of the struggle for national independence.

The opera is an artistic manifesto, a space for reconnecting with collective memory, and a tribute to the decisive role of Mozambican women in nation-building.

As part of the celebrations of Mozambique's 50th anniversary of independence, the Josina Machel Opera takes the audience on a journey through the life of Josina Machel: her political awakening, her active role in FRELIMO, her resistance to oppression, and her legacy that transcends generations.

The initiative, which brings together approximately 250 artists and technicians, is the result of collaboration between various fields of knowledge, integrating historical research, music, theater, and performance. The goal, as explained by Micas Silambo, project coordinator and deputy director for Research and Outreach at ECA-UEM, is to broaden the understanding of women's role in history, foster the emergence of new artistic talents, and transform mindsets through art.

For Graça Machel, the opera places Josina in her rightful place: at the center of the living memory of the struggle and the valorization of women as protagonists of liberation.

"We are deeply grateful and want to congratulate the School and its directors for valuing the sacrifice of those who came before us," she said.

The Opera Josina Machel will take the stage on dates of strong symbolic importance: September 19, Josina Machel's birthday, during the closing of the UEM Scientific Conference, and on November 28 and 29, marking the end of the 2025 Academic Year.
