"Omi Nobu" (New Man) is the title of a documentary by Cape Verdean director Carlos Yuri Ceunink, made in the capital of Burkina Faso in 2023, to be shown on February 18 at the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Center, in the city of Maputo .

According to the synopsis, in the 1980s, on the island of São Nicolau, Cape Verde, the small village of Ribeira Funda, surrounded by mountains and a turbulent sea, experienced a series of tragedies that led the inhabitants to flee, driven by superstition. Everyone left except Quirino da Cruz, 76, who remained in the ghost village.

For four decades, Quirino refused all offers of help to relocate, arguing that Ribeira Funda was his homeland and where he wanted to die. He lived off fishing and farming, spending his days contemplating the ocean and the mountains, accompanied only by a rooster, sparrows and a portable radio.

Now, faced with the burden of isolation, illness and old age, Quirino begins to consider the possibility of leaving the village and moving to Estância de Braz. He will have to decide whether to adapt to a new life or face death alone in the land he has always called home.
