The publisher Ethale Publishing annually promotes the “Ler nas Férias” competition, an initiative to promote reading and critical thinking among students in general secondary education, professional technical education and higher education in Mozambique.
This year, the competition took place in its third edition, in which 304 teenagers and young people living in all provinces of the country participated, with girls reaching 45% of the total participants.
The provinces of Maputo City (126), Maputo Province (96) and Nampula (20) registered the highest number of participants, while the province of Manica, with just one participant, registered the lowest number.
The majority of participants attend higher education (216) at different universities in the country, while professional technical education students (27) were the minority. The overall average of participants is 20 years old.
To participate in “Ler nas Férias”, students are challenged to submit to the competition a critical review of a book of their choice, from the Ethale Publishing catalog and other previously identified national and international publishers, thus encouraging them to cultivate the habit reading and exercising critical thinking, considered one of the main skills for youth in the 20th century.
The main winners of the last edition are Karen Muvique, in the “Teenage” category, and Aniva Joaquim, in the “Young” category, who received monetary values, books of different genres, including a copy of the book “Succernergy”, signed by the author and entrepreneur global Tânia Tomé, and t-shirts from the Ethale brand.
As a way of encouraging youth protagonism and promoting the expression of new critical and conscious voices, the texts of the 10 finalists of the competition were published in an e-book in a collection.
In each edition of the competition, speakers have been invited to share their inspiring reading journeys with participants. In this edition, the speakers were Tânia Tomé (writer, economist, global leader and entrepreneur), Virgília Ferrão (writer and founder of the reading club and indie publisher, Diário de Um Qawwi) and Jessemusse Cacinda (writer, academic and founder of Ethale Publishing ).
