Mozambican architect Sámia Chicoco has made history at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) by defending her master's thesis with the highest possible grade of 20.

This achievement, recognized by a demanding jury of renowned experts, confirms not only the architect's talent but also the intellectual and creative strength of the new generation of professionals gaining ground in the international academic scene.

According to the platform "O Bolseiro", the dissertation "Katembe: Between Utopia and Reality in Chali and Inguide" delves into the depths of the urban contradictions and possibilities of Katembe, in the city of Maputo, an area where the dream of modern development confronts harsh social reality.

The research, the result of rigorous and sensitive work, critically analyzes the impacts of urban expansion on the daily lives of communities, exploring the boundaries between urban planning ideals and human experience.

In her research, Chicoco uses the Chali and Inguide neighborhoods as a starting point to understand how the territory transforms between the desire for modernity and the persistence of deeply rooted practices and ways of life. The study touches on central themes of contemporary architecture, such as informal housing, sustainability, territorial identity, community cohesion, and spatial justice, proposing a reflection on the role of architecture as an instrument of reconciliation between progress and respect for local life.

The architect stated that Katembe is a space of hope, but also of contrasts.

"I wanted to understand how the modern dream of the city dialogues with or collides with the realities of those who inhabit and build the territory every day," she explains.

She recognizes that urban space is not only the result of plans and maps, but also a reflection of the histories, struggles, and aspirations of the people who inhabit it.

In this sense, the jury highlighted the critical maturity, theoretical coherence, and graphic excellence of the dissertation, considering it a relevant contribution to contemporary architectural thought in African contexts.

Sámia Chicoco's approach was praised for its ability to combine technical analysis and social sensitivity, constructing a reading of Katembe that is both scientific and poetic, an interpretation that transcends physical space and approaches the essence of what it means to belong to a place in constant transformation.

Obtaining the highest grade places Sámia Chicoco among the academic elite of FAUP, an institution recognized worldwide for its demanding and rigorous standards in architectural education.
