The 28th edition of the Conference of the Parties, COP28, ended on 12th December in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) met once again.

This event, promoted by the United Nations (UN), aims to discuss and organize initiatives regarding the impacts of climate change with the goal of reviewing the positions and actions of each country, in addition to revisiting the emissions inventory. On this occasion, countries will take the opportunity to discuss how to stabilize concentrations of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.

The Mozambican delegation is led by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, and includes members of the Government, Civil Society Organizations, academics, and other stakeholders in the national environmental agenda.

In terms of priorities, Mozambique aims to strengthen cooperation with other countries to create a national climate adaptation plan, implement early warning systems, engage in discussions on just energy transitions, establish climate insurance in Mozambique, among other crucial actions to address the global climate emergency.

With the country's participation in COP28, it is expected to promote Mozambique as a high-energy renewable source, and also, to renew commitments to implementing the Paris Agreement on climate change, considering the importance of climate and environmental issues; convey the country's message on ongoing actions to address the effects of climate change, looking at both adaptation and building resilience, including energy transition processes, with a focus on the need for financing and technology mobilization.

In this 28th edition of the COP, for the first time the country has a pavilion that will be open to dialogues with various cooperation partners where it will showcase all the country's experiences in combating climate change and exchange experiences with national and international speakers. Likewise, the country will be able to participate in events promoted by COP, as well as attend the COP 28 gala and the celebration of the World Day of the United Arab Emirates.

CONCRETE ACTIONS IN FACE OF THE CLIMATE EMERGENCY

Considering that it is the citizens' bad habits that harm the environment, Nélio Zunguze, the representative of the Youth Coalition for Climate Action, hopes that this conference will bring practical solutions for the country to be free from global warming and more.

According to Zunguze, this event must lay the groundwork for clear points to enhance the health of the youth and should not be "just another event." He stated that there must be practical solutions to "defend a practical position and achieve significant results in terms of concrete actions and determined commitments to fulfill."

With the novelty brought by COP 28, where Mozambique will have its own pavilion, Nélio Zunguze hopes to gather experiences from other countries to later implement in the country. The activist mentioned that he brings the experience of young people from different parts of the country and will present them throughout the event in order to bring solutions that reduce pollution, which contributes to global warming.

This conference is preceded by preparatory meetings of the different groups of which Mozambique is a part, where negotiations will take place, and collective efforts will be promoted to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

It should be noted that one of the practices harming the environment is the misuse of biological resources, such as deforestation through tree felling or fires. The country is open to securing climate financing to acquire resources that assist in combating climate change.
