Karingani Game Reserve, known for its commitment to environmental preservation, has strengthened its collaboration with Gorongosa National Park through a series of initiatives focused on the conservation of large predators in Mozambique and the region.
In a significant gesture to support the conservation of endangered species, Karingani donated a breeding pair of leopards to Gorongosa National Park. The translocation and capture of these felines, carried out with precision by the veterinary and logistics team from the Mozambique Wildlife Alliance (MWA), marked an important milestone for wildlife preservation in the country.
Transported from Massingir, in Gaza Province, the leopards spent just over a month in quarantine, acclimating to their new environment before being released into the vast expanse of Gorongosa National Park. This action aims not only to strengthen the region's carnivore population but also to contribute to the ecological balance and health of local ecosystems.
In addition to its vital role in leopard conservation, Karingani Game Reserve is a stronghold for protecting other carnivore species. Its robust population of wild dogs and spotted hyenas recently received an additional boost with the translocation of three spotted hyenas to Gorongosa National Park. This initiative highlights the collaboration between Karingani, MWA, and Mozambique's conservation authorities, such as the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC), with the goal of restoring natural balance and preserving biodiversity.
Mateus Mutemba, Executive Director of Karingani Game Reserve, emphasizes the importance of strategic partnerships in conservation. He reflects on the donation of a leopard pair to Zinave National Park in 2022 and the translocation of six wild dogs to Majete National Park in Malawi in 2021.
“These initiatives are a clear example of how collaborations can drive large-scale conservation efforts, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity at both national and regional levels,” says.
These actions exemplify Karingani Game Reserve's central role in Mozambique’s conservation efforts, reaffirming the importance of lasting partnerships between private reserves and public conservation areas. Through these initiatives, Karingani not only ensures a sustainable future for large carnivores but also strengthens its position as a pillar of biodiversity, aligning with ANAC's objectives for repopulating protected areas with wildlife.
