
The Quelimane Reading Club (CLQ) is the winner of the sixth edition of the Maria das Neves Rebelo de Sousa Prize, organized in Lisbon by the Portugal-Mozambique Chamber of Commerce.
The award recognizes the efforts of the association in promoting books and reading, especially among children and young people.
The award aims to recognize individuals or organizations that have contributed decisively and with particular impact on Mozambican society. And the Quelimane Reading Club was created on June 20, 2021, with the aim of encouraging a taste for reading and the widespread circulation of books among the most diverse levels of readers.
Its activities include public reading sessions, literary festivals, conversations with writers, creative writing workshops and the publication of an arts and literature magazine, providing a space for artists from different areas to promote their work.
The project trains reading promoters at primary and secondary schools, institutes and universities, thus covering reading promoters and readers per school covered, and reading promoters and readers can be Portuguese language students and teachers or interested parties.
Through the exchange and circulation of books, the CLQ will seek to encourage a taste for books and reading through literary events, such as book fairs; cultural gatherings; poetry readings; storytelling sessions; mobile libraries; book exhibitions; conversations with writers; conversations with readers; conversations with pupils and students; conversations about books, among other literary activities.
In the previous edition of the award, the club was among the finalists, this time it achieved first place and with distinction received 7,500 euros (more than half a million meticais), after 18 days of analysis among the competing associations.
