Xiquitsi started the second series of the 2024 Classical Music Season, a set of shows that brings together national and international artists in various locations in Maputo.
In addition to the Xiquitsi musicians, this edition features the presence of Japanese violinist Maya Egshira and the String Quartet from Matosinhos, Portugal. The repertoire includes works by composers such as Felix Mendelssohn, Franz Schubert, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Benjamin Britten.
The concerts began with the “Classic Night”, held on Friday and Saturday at the Mozambique-China Cultural Center. Then, this Sunday, it is time for the “Concert for Fathers and Sons”, taking place at the Montebelo Indy Congress Hotel. The series will end on the 22nd, with the Latin jazz show “Noite Fora de Série”, at the National Library of Mozambique.
Last month, Projecto Xiquitsi held public performances in Maputo to announce this new series, including percussion displays by young musicians led by Cheny Wa Gune, using traditional instruments such as timbila, batuque and drum to highlight Mozambique's rich cultural diversity.
Xiquitsi, created by the Kulungwana cultural movement, is a project to train orchestras and choirs in Mozambique, which emerged to continue an international classical music festival, organized between 2005 and 2012. Last year, it celebrated its tenth anniversary and expanded the its reach, integrating more young people into musical education across the country.
