New sandal brand is "national identity through footwear"

Xizu is the name of the sandal brand created by Mozambican designers

 

Mozambicans are already walking in a new style. The Xizu sandal brand, launched in December 2023, is the brainchild of XADABABA, young designers who went beyond their dream. To create a brand that would influence the way we live. Along the way, they came across Ipanema, a renowned shoe factory, which paved the way for what was once a mirage to end up on their feet, carrying the stamp and meaning of the things of the earth. After all, Xizu, a word in Xichangana that once referred to a piece, a portion, part of something bigger, now means XADABABA sandals and becomes a new style for summer, for example. This interview with Valter Mudanisse is more than an explanation of the concept of a brand, it spreads the wings to the future and the sustainability of Mozambican design.

 

You created the Xizu sandals, where do you hope the brand will go and how do you hope it will change the style of footwear for Mozambicans?

Our vision for the future specifically for this product is very ambitious, aspiring for it to achieve not only local recognition, but also an international presence. We want sandals to be seen not just as footwear, but as an expression of style and cultural identity for Mozambicans. The hope is that Xizu will transcend conventional boundaries, introducing innovative designs and high-quality materials that not only provide comfort, but also redefine aesthetic standards in Mozambique's footwear scene. By drawing inspiration from local traditions, we hope that Xizu will be an authentic reflection of Mozambique's rich cultural heritage. We believe that by incorporating distinctive elements and collaborating with Ipanema, the sandals will not only stand out in the market, but will also contribute to the empowerment of local communities.

The change in Mozambicans' footwear style is seen as a cultural transformation, where Xizu doesn't just follow trends, but establishes new forms, inspiring the population to embrace originality and uniqueness. This vision goes beyond the product itself, seeking to create an emotional connection between the brand and consumers, promoting a sense of pride and national identity through footwear.

 

How has the public behaved towards this new brand so far, have you had any reactions?

So far, we've seen a very positive response from the public. Many people are enthusiastic about the innovative design and quality of Xizu sandals. We've received valuable feedback from customers who have praised the comfort and style of the sandals. What's more, we've noticed an increase in positive reviews on our online platforms. Of course, we're always open to improvements. Some customers have pointed out areas where we can improve, such as more comprehensive size options, and we are considering these suggestions for our future projects. We are committed to maintaining the high quality that customers appreciate in our sandals. We plan to launch new designs and continue to listen carefully to feedback to ensure that the Xizu brand continues to grow in line with public expectations.

 

This materialised idea also marks the way in which design can impact people's lives. As designers, is that important?

Yes, as a designer, it's crucial to recognise the impact that design can have on people's lives. The Xizu Sandal, when it materialises, not only becomes a physical product, but also influences the experience and lifestyle of those who wear it. Design goes beyond aesthetics, as it can improve functionality, usability and even convey cultural or social messages. Through design, it is possible to create solutions that fulfil the practical and emotional needs of users. In addition, designers have a responsibility to consider sustainability, inclusion and ethics in their projects. Therefore, the Xizu Sandal is not just an object, but an expression of the designer's thinking and vision, in a way moulding people's interaction with the world around them.

Does the launch of the sandals open doors to further realisations?

The launch of the sandals opens the door to exploring new creative trends. We can experiment with innovative designs, unique materials and exclusive details that resonate with the target audience. In the competitive footwear market, design becomes a crucial differentiating factor. An innovative design not only attracts consumers, but also makes the brand stand out in a saturated market. As designers, we are committed to constantly seeking innovation in sandal design, so much so that XIZU represents for us what the "Iphone" would represent for Steve Jobs. We are open to creative collaborations and strategic partnerships. This not only enriches our creative approach, but also expands our market presence. We look forward to engaging our audience in creative ways. We plan to launch interactive initiatives, plus an official opening event for our physical points of sale, without ignoring the new digital ones to create a deeper connection with our customers

The new goal is to develop a plan for creating a range of diversified products, expanding beyond our current core business, shoe design. We believe that this initiative will not only allow us to explore new creative opportunities, but also diversify our portfolio to meet the growing demands of the market..

 

How important are partnerships and collaborations for innovative ideas to be implemented and succeed?

Speaking of which, this project wouldn't be what it is without the great partnership & collaboration of IPANEMA, many thanks to Giselle, director of Ipanema for opening the doors for us. Partnerships and collaborations play a key role in implementing innovative ideas for a number of reasons. Firstly, by joining forces with other individuals or organisations, it is possible to combine skills, knowledge and resources, resulting in a synergy that can drive the development and execution of ideas. In addition, partnerships provide an exchange of perspectives and experiences, enriching the creative process and improving the quality of the solutions proposed. Different points of view can open up new possibilities and challenge assumptions, leading to more innovative and effective approaches. Another crucial benefit is the extension of reach and influence. Strategic partnerships can provide access to new markets, audiences and resources that an individual organisation might not be able to reach on its own. This is especially important in a globalised scenario, where collaboration can boost the visibility and impact of an innovation. In addition, partnerships can help reduce the risks associated with implementing innovative ideas.
